About the National Park
The Mafia Island Marine Park was established in 1995 to protect the island’s diverse marine life and coral reefs. It covers an area of approximately 822 square kilometers, including the island itself and the surrounding waters. The park is home to over 400 species of fish, 48 species of coral, and a variety of other marine life, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.
Wildlife and Vegetation
Mafia Island is home to a variety of wildlife, both on land and in the sea. The island’s forests are home to a number of bird species, including the rare and endangered Pemba green pigeon. Climate
Mafia Island has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year. The rainy season lasts from March to May, with the heaviest rainfall usually occurring in April. The dry season, from June to October, is the best time to visit, as the weather is sunny and the seas are calm.
Accessibility
Mafia Island is accessible by air and sea. The island has a small airport, with regular flights from Dar es Salaam and other major cities in Tanzania. There are also regular ferry services from the mainland to Mafia Island, which take approximately two hours.
