About the National Park

The Mafia Island Marine Park was established in 1995 to protect the island’s diverse marine life and coral reefs. It covers an area of approximately 822 square kilometers, including the island itself and the surrounding waters. The park is home to over 400 species of fish, 48 species of coral, and a variety of other marine life, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.

Wildlife and Vegetation

Mafia Island is home to a variety of wildlife, both on land and in the sea. The island’s forests are home to a number of bird species, including the rare and endangered Pemba green pigeon.
